Guide to Managing Your Skin and Hair in Winter Weather

While temperatures are warming up across the country, we’re not quite out of winter. That means our skin is dry and our hair isn’t at its best. While you’re taking care of your kids, don’t forget to take care of yourself to look and feel your best!

The cold weather and wind can cause considerable dryness to our exposed areas when we are outside. Often these are the hands, face, head and hair.  Dry, cracked knuckles, coarse hair with static and dry cheeks are just a few of the expected side effects from Mother Nature. How can we best care for these?

Don’t Dry Out Your Skin

Dry skin and scalp with or without dandruff can be one of the biggest troubles in the winter.  Dr. Mia Finkelston, who treats patients using LiveHealth Online, recommends pure coconut oil, she has been using it as a new moisturizer for over a year. Warm it up in your hands or on a cup hot plate and enjoy the texture, the warmth and the effect on your skin and scalp. Buy this in your grocery. While it’s a great addition for cooking, you can also add it to your daily skin care routine!

Maintain Your Messy Hair

For starters, try not to wash your hair as often, it can dry out your ends and your scalp. Try to wash it every 2-3 days and learn about the new dry shampoos if you need a little lift or you feel greasy.

A heavy conditions mask once a week can do wonders for restoring shine and bounce! Dr. Mia Finkelston suggests that you talk to your stylist about recommended products. Her stylist, Tami, gives her pointers every year. She uses oil for her hair as a finishing product on her ends before she even goes out the door.

If hair products don’t work for you, a hat is also stylish and protective. Try one of the new knitted headbands if you don’t want to flatten the top of your head as much.
